['æʃbərɪ], John Lawrence, amerikanischer Schriftsteller, * Rochester (N. Y.) 28. 7. 1927; seit 1974 Professor für englische Literatur und Creative writing am Brooklyn College in New York; Kunstkritiker renommierter Zeitschriften in Europa und in den USA. Ashbery ist besonders durch seine Gedichtsammlungen (v. a. »Self-portrait in a convex mirror«, 1975; deutsch »Selbstporträt im konvexen Spiegel«) als Mitglied der New York School of Poets bekannt geworden. Sein collageartiger lyrischer Stil besitzt Anklänge an die Symbolisten und T. S. Eliot.
